At its third annual ceremony in Toronto yesterday, Energy Storage Canada awarded Invinity Energy Systems the 2024 Energy Storage Milestone Award in recognition of the significant expansion the Company completed at its Vancouver-based manufacturing facility.

Expanded in a short space of time in response to the fast-growing demand for Invinity’s alternative to lithium-ion batteries for energy storage projects, the Company’s Vancouver facility is now able to produce up to 200 MWh of vanadium flow batteries per year. Critically, this expansion further recognises the energy storage market’s interest in securing a diversity of grid-scale storage technologies and the growth and development of this market to reliably provide timely production of assets for projects and procurements in Canada and beyond. A subsequent benefit of this expansion was that, along with the continue proof provided by its deployed vanadium flow batteries, the Company’s pipeline trebled in the following months to almost 6 GWh of demand.
“Invinity’s mission is to accelerate the energy transition by delivering flexibility to our future grid using our durable, safe vanadium flow batteries. While I am encouraged by our progress along that path, I’m even more excited by how we’re helping to lay the foundations for Canada’s transition to a strong, low-carbon economy.
Our Vancouver facility, which includes both our R&D centre of excellence and North American manufacturing hub, is proving today that Invinity has the capability to deliver ever larger projects for its customers and it underlines how Canadian industry, building on a pedigree of excellence in energy of all forms, can lead that path. On behalf of our entire team, I thank Energy Storage Canada for this tremendous honour.”
– Matt Harper, Chief Commercial Officer, Invinity Energy Systems
Invinity was recognised alongside fellow award recipients Rodan Energy Systems, Ontario’s IESO, and Six Nations past Chief Mark Hill with CEO of Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation Matt Jamieson. Ontario Minister of Energy Stephen Lecce spoke ahead of the awards, setting the context for the opportunity for energy storage in Ontario by highlighting the province’s present and upcoming procurements for 5,000 MW of capacity as a critical means of enabling future economic growth.

Invinity’s ability to achieve this expansion was primarily due to the Company securing multiple contracts for its vanadium flow batteries during 2022, including over 30 MWh in three months, which needed to be delivered quickly to its growing customer base in countries including Canada and the U.S. The importance of this expanded facility was further underlined as it was chosen to be the venue from which Canada’s Minister for Energy, Jonathan Wilkinson, launched Canada’s first Clean Energy Strategy on 7 August 2023.
