Invinity unveils its fourth-generation vanadium flow battery, optimising our proven product platform for large-size energy storage up to gigawatt scale.
Tuesday 3 December 2024
Invinity Energy Systems is excited to announce the commercial release of ENDURIUM™, our next-generation modular vanadium flow battery. ENDURIUM builds on our unmatched experience of three generations of flow batteries in the field, integrating all of the benefits of our VS3 product platform—already deployed by customers across the world—into a design optimized for use in long-duration, high-throughput large-scale energy storage projects.
Above: A single 300 kWh ENDURIUM module
Achieving up to double the energy density at site level than the VS3 and with performance verified by DNV, a world leader in testing and certification across the energy value chain, ENDURIUM is engineered to scale from 10 MWh – 1 GWh and charge/discharge durations between 4 and 18 hours with no cycle limits and proven sub-second response times. Our proven VS3 platform will continue to be available for systems under 10 MWh.
Addressing a Global Need for Large Scale LDES
We’re introducing ENDURIUM at a pivotal moment for the global energy sector. Last week at the COP29 Summit in Azerbaijan, delegates ratified the Global Green Energy Storage Pledge which aims to increase global energy storage capacity sixfold from 2022 levels. This target means the world will need 1,500 GW of storage connected by 2030–aligning with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) recommendations to meet the emissions-reduction goals set at COP28.
Achieving this goal will require adding over 158 GW of energy storage annually through 2030; ENDURIUM is perfectly suited to meet the scale of projects required to achieve this growth and the needs of a number of the most exciting energy storage build-out initiatives, including the UK’s LDES Cap & Floor Scheme, LDES deployment targets in states like California and New York, and Ontario’s planned LDES procurement, as well as meeting New South Wales’ long duration definition within the context of the 28 GWh target announced recently.
Building on Invinity’s proven technology – which has been deployed in over 80 projects globally, most recently with our VS3 platform – ENDURIUM takes the same modular approach to a platform optimised for large-scale wind, solar and standalone energy storage projects. That means ENDURIUM is built to deliver exceptional energy throughput with low levelised cost of storage over 25 years.
Applications
The robust and scalable platform is designed from the ground up to tackle some of the toughest challenges in energy storage today, including:
- High Throughput Applications: Many energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion, are limited in terms of how frequently they can cycle, or how long the discharge can last. In contrast, ENDURIUM’s non-degrading chemistry gives owners unlimited flexibility in how they use their batteries, easily discharging for up to 18 hours, or performing multiple shorter cycles per day to address ever-changing market conditions and maximise revenue capture.
- Large Wholesale & Grid Assets: Standalone or solar-paired assets on teh grid that can provide capacity for 6+ hours at a time are in increasing demand. ENDURIUM is ideal for large-scale projects participating in markets such as CAISO and ERCOT, or applying to the UK’s LDES Cap & Floor Scheme.
- Paired with Solar at Large Industrial Sites: Worldwide, large commercial business can realise reduced energy costs, lower carbon emissions and increase resiliency by pairing ENDURIUM with solar generation. Avoiding peak pricing and shifting large blocks of solar energy for overnight operations are ideal applications for ENDURIUM.
- Locations Facing Difficult Permitting due to Fire Risk and Noise: Addressing the concerns of local authorities and residents is critical to successful project development and absolute fire safety is a non-negotiable for an increasing number of projects. With its superior fire safety credentials and simple fan-based cooling, ENDURIUM is an excellent choice for installations where safety is a top priority and noisy HVAC cooling would be problematic.
Energy Storage Beyond Lithium
Like our widely-deployed VS3 platform, ENDURIUM features exceptional sustainability credentials, local manufacturing content, and third-party validated performance.
Beginning with sustainability, ENDURIUM has been designed with end-of-life recyclability in mind. Not only is the electrolyte itself fully recoverable and perpetually reusable, but we estimate that 99% of the remainder of the system – mostly metals, plastics, and electronics – can be widely and easily recycled.
“Where are your batteries made” is a question we get asked daily against a backdrop of global trade and tariff uncertainty. We know that domestic content, local support, and transparent supply chain are of paramount importance. ENDURIUM is proudly manufactured at and supported by our facilities in the UK and North America.
And no project passes FID without a rock-solid bankability assessment. Where this is a challenge for almost all non-lithium storage products, Invinity stands out. Over the past months, DNV has been validating ENDURIUM performance by running an extensive range of test cycles on our beta platforms. As with VS3, we can share under NDA their report which independently verifies the system’s performance specifications, and Invinity’s manufacturing, quality, and supply chain maturity. Further, the system will ship certified to UL and CE standards.
